A 10-minute writing task - MYTHICAL BIRDS FOR EMOTIONS, IDEAS AND MOODS

16.01.26

Week Sixteen Writing Challenge! 🐦✨

This week, we’re exploring how birds can become powerful symbols in writing. Birds aren’t just creatures in the sky — they can represent emotions, ideas, and moods through their movement, sound, and appearance.

Our focus this week is on mythical and fantastical birds.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll explore other bird settings that are very common in 11+ writing:
• A spooky raven for mysterious and suspenseful scenes
Forest birds for calm, quiet, and gentle moods
Jungle birds for energetic, adventurous settings

Your task is to use a mythical bird as a metaphor for an emotion — without naming the feeling directly.

🐉 Section: Mythical & Fantastical Birds (Magical Mood)

Think of glowing wings, feathered dragons, or birds made of light, fire, mist, or shadow.

Think about:
• How does this bird move — soaring, spiralling, gliding, bursting into the air?
• What does it look like — shimmering, smoky, fiery, transparent, glowing?
• What emotion could it represent — hope, bravery, wonder, excitement, fear?

Figurative Language You Might Use:

Metaphor
• Foreboding: The shadow-bird was a storm cloud, blocking the sky above my head.
• Upbeat: The light-bird was a sunrise, lifting my heart into the air.

Simile
• Foreboding: The dark bird circled like a warning bell in the sky.
• Upbeat: The glowing bird floated like a candle in the night.
