A 10-minute writing task - CREATE CALMNESS USING SHOW, DON'T TELL

Week Eighteen Writing Challenge – Forest Birds
Many 11+ writing topics invite students to set their descriptions or stories in forests or mysterious places, which makes this week’s theme a perfect fit. We’re focusing on how to use forest birds to create calm, peaceful, and gentle moods in your writing — helping students bring woodland settings to life with sound, movement, and atmosphere.

This week, we’ll practise Show, Don’t Tell in a softer way. Instead of saying a scene is calm, safe, or peaceful, we’ll let the quiet presence of birds — their songs, wings, and movements — create that feeling for the reader.

🌲 Our focus this week is on calm, gentle, and peaceful forest scenes.

🕊️ Section: Forest Birds (Calm & Peaceful Mood)
Think of birds hidden among the leaves, fluttering between branches, or singing as sunlight filters through the trees.

Think about:
• How do the birds move — gliding, fluttering, hopping, settling, or drifting between branches?
• What do they sound like — soft chirps, gentle trills, whispering wings, or distant calls?
• What might they represent — safety, freedom, hope, comfort, or curiosity?

Figurative Language You Might Use:
Metaphor
• The bird’s song was a ribbon of light tied through the trees.
• The forest breathed through the wings of its hidden choir.
Simile
• The birdsong floated like a lullaby through the leaves.
• Wings brushed the air like soft pages turning in a book.
Personification
• The trees listened as the birds shared their morning secrets.
• A robin greeted the sun from its branch.
Alliteration
• Gentle, golden light glimmered through the glade.
• Soft, singing sounds slipped through the silence.
Onomatopoeia
• Chirp! The quiet note echoed between the trunks.
• Flutter! Leaves and wings danced together.

📝 10-Minute Task:
Write 3–4 sentences using a forest bird to create a peaceful or gentle mood. Don’t write, “It felt calm” — instead, let the bird’s movement, sound, and presence show the feeling.

✍️ Example Sentences:
• A small bird glided between the branches, its song threading peace through the quiet air.
• Soft wings fluttered above me, and the forest seemed to sigh in relief.
• Sunlight caught on a robin’s feathers as it hopped along the mossy path, leading me deeper into the trees.
• Gentle chirps drifted through the leaves like whispers meant only for the morning.

✨ Coming Up Next:
Next week, we’ll explore how animals and nature can help build exciting and adventurous moods in writing.

Happy writing, everyone! ✍️
