Week Eighteen Writing Challenge – Forest Birds
Many 11+ writing topics invite students to set their descriptions or stories in forests or mysterious places, which makes this week’s theme a perfect fit. We’re focusing on how to use forest birds to create calm, peaceful, and gentle moods in your writing — helping students bring woodland settings to life with sound, movement, and atmosphere.
This week, we’ll practise Show, Don’t Tell in a softer way. Instead of saying a scene is calm, safe, or peaceful, we’ll let the quiet presence of birds — their songs, wings, and movements — create that feeling for the reader.
Think of birds hidden among the leaves, fluttering between branches, or singing as sunlight filters through the trees.
Think about:
• How do the birds move — gliding, fluttering, hopping, settling, or drifting between branches?
• What do they sound like — soft chirps, gentle trills, whispering wings, or distant calls?
• What might they represent — safety, freedom, hope, comfort, or curiosity?

• Soft wings fluttered above me, and the forest seemed to sigh in relief.
• Sunlight caught on a robin’s feathers as it hopped along the mossy path, leading me deeper into the trees.
