Your task was to create tension in your writing just by describing your character ascending some stairs - and what a wonderful job you've done, Nabeeha!

You drip feed your reader information slowly, and this builds the tension. We know what the carpet looks like, that gas was coming into the room and how the character was feeling. Then, you describe his slow and cautious journey to the top. Excellent!
