Chidren's writing: A poem - by Aadhya

14.04.25

I recently received an email from a student I taught a few years ago. What a lovely surprise! I am posting her poem here so other students can read and enjoy it. It is powerful in its message, using language and structure to make us think, and the repeated metaphor of the butterfly works brilliantly.

Here's the email, and poem! Enjoy...

Hello Anna,

This is Aadhya from one of your past creative writing lessons (around 3 years ago).
I hope you're doing well! I wanted to take a moment to share an achievement that you helped me achieve and I am really proud of. I recently won a 'Prepare for peace' poem competition which will be published and shared with world leaders.

Your support and guidance during those one-hour group lessons have played a huge role in this achievement, and I appreciate the support and guidance you have given me.

Thank you for being such an inspirational teacher. I look forward to hearing from you soon. I have attached a copy of my entry for you to read!

Prepare for Peace - a poem by Aadhya

Peace does not need words or actions

All it needs is thought

Peace can change lives, or it may destroy others

It may be a small action

But to another it can be a big one

Peace and love are quite similar.

Both only needing it spread for people to understand the importance of it.

Why can't there be peace

War and arguments are the answer

Where the grown-ups fight like little children over a piece of land

like children fighting over toys

It may create a lot of noise

A butterfly flutters in the distance

But as the evening falls,

And the adults lie on the ground playing dead

Their bodies not moving but rot like bread

A butterfly flutters, hoping to keep peace

Far far away , a Butterfly flutters

As dreams were shuttered.

Every day it may be the same,

But remember, it is not a game

As people's houses burn in flames

A Butterly flutters.

When world peace can be achieved

The butterfly leaves

As its job has been finished

But will that ever happen?

The butterfly flutters,

Everyday.

Every week.

Every Month.

Every Year.

To keep peace.
