Learn 'happiness' phrases for 11+ writing

Did you know that it is World Kindness Day on Monday?

Children may be asked to wear odd socks to school – so don’t be alarmed as they leave the house! 

Kindness can lead to a feeling of happiness, and it is happiness that I’d like to explore for this week’s 11+ writing post! 

In 11+ exam writing, there’s little time to write a story in depth, so character development rapidly becomes condensed.

Your child will probably write more about how bad a character feels in the problem section than how elated or happy a character feels at the beginning or end.

So, having a few phrases up your sleeve is important to demonstrate a character’s happiness quickly and effectively.

Here is a list of phrases and a task to try at home …

Task for home 

  1. Read the list of phrases below.
  2. Find three phrases you like.
  3. Write three sentences using the three different phrases to describe the person in the picture on this post.

Example:

Sami didn’t usually travel to school on a suitcase, but her happiness made her feel invincible, and she gave it a go.

  1. she felt like her feet barely touched the ground
  2. she felt a stab of hope
  3. happiness streaked through him like a comet
  4. a quiet contentment spread through him
  5. gratitude welled up inside her
  6. she felt a whisper of happiness
